Frequently Asked Questions

Naturally you may have some questions about Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy, particularly if your only experience is the stage Hypnosis you have seen on Television. Below I have tried to answer questions which have often been asked of me and which I hope will put your mind at rest. If you have a question or concern that I have not addressed please contact me by phone or email and I will be pleased to discuss with you.

Do I have to have hypno-coaching?
No. It is important that you are comfortable and if you would prefer coaching without the use of hypnosis then that is not a problem. It is totally your choice.
Will I be able to be hypnotised?
Yes. Anyone can be hypnotised as long as they want to as trance is a natural state that we experience many times a day. A hypnotherapist cannot force you into hypnosis against your will.
Will I lose control?
No. This is a very common misconception about hypnosis. You cannot be compelled to do anything you do not want to, as your unconscious mind is there to protect you and will not allow anything that is against your will, beliefs, values or spiritual belief. A hypnotherapist does not have control over you!
Can you make me do something I don’t want to do?
No. Firstly, your unconscious mind will not allow you to do anything you do not wish to do and secondly there is always a part of you that is alert and vigilant, whether you are awake, deeply sleep or in a hypnotic trance. Your mind will simply reject suggestions which are not beneficial or acceptable to you and your professionally trained hypnotherapist will only use suggestions that have been discussed and agreed with you and are for your therapeutic gain.
Can I get “stuck” in a trance?
No. You are free to come out of the hypnotic trance whenever you wish, although my client report trance to be an amazingly relaxing experience which they do not want to “wake” from. If any emergency was to occur, you would be fully “awake” immediately and you will always leave a session fully alert.
Will I remember what happened?
This depends. During trance you may drift off into your own thoughts and so may find that you have not actively heard all of what has been said. However, your unconscious mind has been fully present and listening so the therapeutic gain in not affected.
How many sessions will I need?
All my sessions are tailored specifically for you, as an individual, this is therefore something best discussed on an individual basis and usually at your first session, however, as a general rule, Hypnotherapy is a brief therapy so many problems can be helped in as few as 3 – 4 sessions.
What does Hypnosis feel like?
Hypnosis is a state of profound relaxation that you allow yourself to enter. As we are all unique people we will experience the hypnotic state differently, however, most clients will comment on how relaxed and pleasant the trance state is and often say it is the most relaxed they have ever been! Whilst in this relaxed hypnotic trance, you will be aware of your surroundings (although not interested in them) and able to converse if you wish. You may be aware of a heaviness or lightness of your limbs and indeed of your whole body you may also tingle, feel colder or warmer. All of this is just an indication of the deeply relaxed state that you have entered and allows access to your powerful inner resources within your unconscious so that with the aide and partnership of your trained Hypnotherapist you are able to achieve your goals.
